I get error # 80070005 whenever I try to update Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for the past month and a half. It tells me Windows cannot search for updates. I have tried to use System Restore, but it keeps failing..

Maybe read through this thread from Microsoft Answers, and see if something works out for you. Seems like a common error, so there are a couple of answers already. –  slhck Apr 26 '11 at 12:48
Does it happen for all the updates or some specific ones ? Have you checked windowsupdate.log ? –  The_IT_Guy_You_Don't_Like Aug 16 at 15:47

According to this your account may be a member of the Administrators and Guest security groups. There's also the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) that can help with WU problems.

Here is a bunch of things to try, as well.

I dealt with the same error. My resolution was uninstalling all .Net Framework packages under control panel and then restart the computer. If you run a Windows update again, it should work.

also, with the new update, the new .Net framework files are installed –  Rudolph Oct 14 '13 at 11:53
