I have this really annoying Windows problem.

I'm running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and have an Ati 5870 1GB gpu

What happens is that every time I do something that requires the display modes to change (e.g. start up a full screen game, change the windows theme, log in/log out) the systems completely locks up for a while (10-20 seconds, sometimes a lot longer when alt-tabbing out of a game) before finally changing the display modes.

This doesn't start happening right after boot though, only when the PC has been running for a while. Once it starts happening, simply restarting the video driver fixes it temporarily (disable and enable video card in device manager).

I suspect this has something to do with the screen saver or automatically turning off the screen power saving function. I tried disabling them both and kept the system running for a few days and this didn't happen once. Hard to be sure though.

I did also try completely wiping the video drivers with driver sweeper and reinstalling.

I don't have any other graphics problems though and the system runs perfectly apart from this.

I'm hoping has a solution for this or atleast has the same problem so we can work at it together.

Not sure what system info would be relevant here so I'm not just gonna dump some huge amount of stuff here, just let me know what info might help diagnose this and I'll update the question.

Thanks in advance.

If it doesn’t start happening until the system has been running for a while, it could be heat build-up. Try making sure that the video card is as cool as possible and see if it still happens. – Synetech Apr 28 '11 at 21:12
Temps are fine. The gpu goes up to 75°C max under load. Also that wouldn't explain why restarting the video driver fixes it. Pretty sure it's a software problem. – steini Apr 28 '11 at 21:35
