I'm curious to how fast i type, but it needs to be under real word conditions - i'd like a (preferably free) software that'll keep track of how many keystrokes i make per minute, while i type on some other software - say irc or word . As such, it would NOT make me type specific texts - it just needs to sit and watch.

I'd prefer something that'll run on windows XP, but linux solutions are fine

Probably not what you're looking for but there's this which is free and works well (if you don't mind a weird output choice) mgccl.com/2009/02/28/… – Blomkvist May 14 '11 at 5:42

zhornsoftware.co.uk/keycounter/index.html seems close, i'll have to try it with a long essay to get a meaningful answer tho.. i got it via your link ;p – Journeyman Geek May 14 '11 at 6:16
I never tried that one until today. For just a few lines of code it's actually really impressive. – Blomkvist May 14 '11 at 20:48
