I am looking for good solutions to these situations:

  1. I have a router and switch for my home business. Is it needed to use a switch for between my computer with the router connected to the switch? Is this is a good procedure to use? Is it needed?

  2. If I am only using the router, are there any good practices to follow to keep people away from being able to use the bandwidth from my router? Right now I have it setup so only certain computer MAC addresses can access the router.

Any suggestions and feedback would help me to maximize my home business setup.

Assuming you don't have that many computers plugged into your router it isn't necessary that you use a switch.

To keep other people off of your network make sure your wireless is using the most up to date encryption option that your devices will allow(like WPA2 over WEP if its an option).

I have 5 computers so that is why I was wondering if it is good to have a switch with the router plugged into the switch or does this not make any sense to do? – pertrai1 May 21 '11 at 12:46
It doesn't hurt you to have the switch plugged in. Home router/firewalls often have a built in switch with enough ports for users but it isn't uncommon at all to plug a switch into them to add more computers/devices. – sparks May 21 '11 at 12:48
