I remember seeing some application (or was it Firefox plugin?) that notifies of emails, new blog posts, new forum posts, forum PMs, RSS news and whatnot. What it is called and where can i download it?

You should rephrase this to ask for recommendations for software that meets that criteria. You not only may get the response you want, but you may also get recommendations for similar (and possibly better) apps as well. – MaQleod May 27 '11 at 18:15

I think the closest thing to what you're asking is Growl, which is available for both Mac and Windows although there undoubtably are clones.

Apps need to be written to be growl aware. You'd need to check your apps for compatibility.

Growl is only a notification system, though. It doesn't check feeds or email itself. – grawity May 27 '11 at 17:10
