My HP Pavilion dv7 won't power up. When plugged in to the adapter the three lights in the front left corner flash on and off, and it will try to boot. However it will always shut down soon after - it sometimes boots long enough for the screen to come on for a few seconds but that's it.

Any ideas what's wrong?

is this a new or refurbished computer, or have you used it for a while? Any recent changes like new install of Windows? – bboyreason May 30 '11 at 12:00

i think the blinking lights might indicate what the problem is as part of POST. Look up the model with POST. For example, 3 blinks could indicate battery problem, 2 blinks HD problem. – bboyreason May 30 '11 at 14:30
@bboyreason Where can I get a list of all the combination of lights for troubleshooting with POST? – Alpine Sep 16 '11 at 15:01

Do a hard reset, remove the main battery, disconnect the AC adapter, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, connect AC only, see if it will boot.

If this does not fix it, most likely it is a motherboard or other hardware issue issue.

I generally recommend this, but hold the power button down for 2 mins. Apparently your experience shows otherwise. +1 – music2myear Sep 16 '11 at 13:59
15 seconds works for me on all notebooks and desktops, but i double it because some people have a different idea of what 15 seconds is. – Moab Sep 16 '11 at 16:44
