If I modify a production RDS instance to increase the instance size due to load issues, is that a safe operation and will it cause any downtime?

Possible duplicate of AWS RDS instance upgrade down time, and both questions belong on Server Fault actually - I've flagged accordingly, but the flag triggered no migration, despite being classified as 'helpful' by a moderator, maybe just an oversight? – Steffen Opel Feb 9 at 22:54
