I'd like to find an app that could be used for notifying people on other computers. We have about 10 interested people on Windows boxes on a LAN, and one dedicated box which runs 24/7.

Basically I'd like to have a small app that doesn't require installation, that would run in system tray and pop up a message.

Everyone could also disable notifications, and be able to send a message to everyone else.

I'm thinking that installing XMPP server on the 24/7 box and using portable Miranda that could work, but maybe there is also IRC client that can show notifications for each new message.

Do you have other ideas?

If you enable Windows' built-in "messenger" service you can probably use the net send or msg commands.

I believe msg is available in all the business versions of XP, Vista and 7. It certainly exists in XP Pro SP3. Admittedly I haven't tried to make it work. – RedGrittyBrick Jun 7 '11 at 13:08
