I would like to get a Linux server. I am an average user. The server is just for fun to see what I can so with it. Any suggestions on software?

If you want to learn about Linux, use an OS with no GUI (Windows X, Gnome, etc). This will help you learn about it a little bit more about the back bones of the server. The GUI also impares the performance of the server greatly, so when you are using a server that will have a real purpose (web server, mail server, Domain Server, etc...) you won't need a GUI. IF you would like to get experience with a server that is widely used in the professional environment, use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. You do not need a license for this, but you will not get updates and support without buying a license. – David Jun 10 '11 at 14:38
