Since this problem happens when I log into either an XP box or a Windows 7 box, I'm betting it is related to a corrupted roaming profile. I'm hoping it's as simple as navigating over to the profile directory and blowing away a file or directory that windows believes I wanted to show up under Start->All Programs.

At anyrate, with 200 users on our domain, so much as hovering over the start menu freezes my machine as it scrambles to collect the list of directories it thinks I want.

Any light would be appreciated.

Just so the problem description is clear:

I log into a domain with a user ID that makes use of a roaming profile (why, I don't know...., system admins choice). On either my Windows 7 machine or my XP machine, if I click the Windows Start button at the bottom of the screen, and select 'All Programs' my machine eventually displays all the applications that are installed on my machine, as well as a folder icon for the network home directory of each user on our domain. Needless to say, I can't look into those folders due to security restrictions, yet Windows explorer, for some reason thinks I have an interest in those folders, and presents them in painfully slow detail.
