I'm trying to install Microsoft Expressions Encoder in a VirtualBox 4 VM running Windows XP Pro SP3. The host OS is Debian Wheezy. VB was downloaded from Oracle's repository, Expressions 4 with SP1 from Microsoft's site.

When I run the Expressions Encoder installer, it unpacks files, then creates a Task Bar button showing "Expressions Setup", then ... nothing. Task Manager shows that XSetup.exe is using over 90% of CPU ... forever. I let it run for 12 hours at one point. Nothing. It never even manages to display the setup dialog.

I have already tried various things:

  • Setting XP to VGA Mode
  • Using Expressions Encoder 4 (no SP1) instead
  • Installing Silverlight (When that didn't work, I reverted to my last snapshot, since I don't actually want Silverlight)

I've opened a ticket at VirtualBox.org, but no answer so far.

I hate silent failures.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?
