I am starting out with web development (a bit too late some might say) and have begun creating very simple web pages with HTML and peppered with bits of Javascript. Since I'm in my nascent stages, I use almost any text editor for creating these web pages.

This interest (well work related) is going to stick for a while and so I've decided to keep an allegiance with just one Javascript editor that will assist me better than the average text editor.

I know options are many but I'd rather use one everyone else in these circles are using. So, which is the most widely used free, lightweight Javascript editor out there?

(If those adjectives that describe the Javascript editor hinders your ability to answer, ignore them altogether; that's why they have been striked out)

Notepad++ is one of the best text editors out there, and a lot of people use it. If you want to get experience with an IDE I would personally recommend NetBeans. It has functionality for almost every language and framework via it plugins, but it is intuitive and easy to get started with (unlike Eclipse in my opinion). It is an IDE that will grow with you. – typoknig Jun 18 '11 at 5:52
