I have the task to update the domain controller in the organisation where I work. I want to create a hell of a fast Domain/DNS/DHCP server (U1 rack server) to achieve fast logons times for domain users.

My choice goes to the WD Velociraptor 300GB SATA 10.000rpm x2. But I know that this disk is becoming old. Is this drive still the fasted compared with other SATA2 drives? Or is there a better choice around?

I'm voting to close as too localized -- the question and its answer has no value in a few weeks from now. Who knows which drives will be around by then? Your best bet would be to discuss this in the Super User Chat if some people are around. You could also ask on Server Fault, as you're having a professional problem. But remember that they don't like shopping recommendations as well, so you may want to ask about what to look for in a hard disk for a Domain Controller instead. – slhck Jun 19 '11 at 13:27

@Sven This would have been better in ServerFault, but to answer your question, HELL NO. You may get away with it, but your performance will stink if you have more than 10 users. This is my opinion, but SATA drives should never be used in a server...Use only SAS drives in server. – KCotreau Jun 19 '11 at 14:16
@KCotreau Thank you for your comment! I will look into the SAS drives. – Sven Jun 19 '11 at 15:25
@Sven You should also look into some sort of redundancy also, like RAID 1 or RAID 5 (the two most common). – KCotreau Jun 19 '11 at 16:17
@KCotreau I was thinking about RAID 5 with 3 Seagate Cheeta 300GB 15krpm SAS. – Sven Jun 19 '11 at 16:43
