I recently got a bug report for a game engine I'm working on. Apparently for one of my users, the MIDI playback is not working right. According to the report:

Midi files output sound but also an extremely loud and repetitive noise. This does not generate a runtime error. Confirmed that midi files play correctly on the same system without this noise using various media players. Using onboard sound, Realtek High Definition Audio @ 24 bit and 48khz. Default midi synthesizer is the standard Roland GM/GS(R).

I'm not able to reproduce this error on my end. Everything sounds fine, with no evidence of corruption, so I wonder if my music library is just doing something a little bit different that his driver is having trouble with. The audio corruption apparently happens with any and all MIDI files.

According to the report, he's on Windows 7 x64 with:

+ Sound, video and game controllers
  - ATI High Definition Audio Device (driver 7.11.0.7706)
  - Realtek High Definition Audio (driver 6.0.1.6151)

Is anyone out there with similar hardware aware of any issues with MIDI playback that could generate "an extremely loud and repetitive noise" that isn't supposed to be there? Is this a known issue, and are there any fixes or workarounds?
