Try Arch Linux. Just by the way, not the correct forum with this type of question.

Depends on what you want to do / learn.

If you want to make it a server you could take a look at Debian / Ubuntu Server.

If you want to learn how Linux works and what comes into play in building a system you could take a look at Gentoo or Linux from scratch.

If you want a light weight desktop environment you could take a look at Damn Small Linux or Xubuntu or make your own with Debian, Arch, Gentoo or whatever.

Your PC is not so old however and you can actually run any Linux distribution you like...

Any distro. It depends on what do you want to do with it (desktop or server).

-1 for really not helpful answer - besides you are plainly incorrect - none of the ARM / PowerPC or other architecture specific distros will run on x86 hardware. – Kimvais Jun 23 '11 at 8:47
I believe that you should start with what you want to do and then check what's available for that. I didn't add that also depends on his experience with Linux (which I assume is none). – Marius Ursache Jun 23 '11 at 8:51

What do you want to do? http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ is very small and fast.

Lubunu - Lubuntu is Ubuntu with the LXDE desktop environment, without GNOME or Unity. LXDE is a very lightweight desktop environment based on the Openbox window manager. With Lubuntu, you get the vast repositories of Ubuntu/Debian, and a huge community.

If you're familiar with Linux already and know how / want to set up everything yourself, I'd recommend Debian Testing or Arch Linux.

I would go for Debian 6.0 for the following reasons:

  1. Your computer is not that old
  2. The distro is modern, which means you need not to jump through series of multiple hoops to use any modern software on it.
  3. It is mainstream, so it is much easier to find help.
  4. If you install just the bare install and put a lightweight desktop on it, the diffrerence between DSL etc is not huge

You can download it from this link.
