I've been using Dropbox for a while and really like it. I enjoy the fact that there is a desktop client that just allows me to drop something in a folder and its instantly available.

However, I came across Tonido and I was wondering if its the right thing for me. Its difficult to tell from their website exactly the specific features. Do they have a client or is it all web based?

I currently use Dropbox as a sort of version control system (like Git), could I do this easily using Tonido?

Also, from what I'm getting, I access the folders on my computer directly from an external point. How secure is this?

Tonido hosts the files on your own 'server' and acts as a gateway to it so you don't have to configure forwarding and such - in effect its about the same as running a web accessable file share with authentication on your own system, and setting up dynamic dns for it.

Unlike dropbox, i don't think it syncs via a desktop client, or does versioning (there's no mention og it).

So.. its a bit of apples and oranges. (for windows users, sadly, none of the run your own dropbox clones are mature enough at this point) - one's a sharing and management application, the other's primarily for synchronisation.

security wise, its hosted by you, so, i suppose it depends on whether they use SSL or not.
