I recently assembled a new computer so that all hardware is pretty new. Since then I've been experiencing some problem with IRQs when running Debian 6.0. On random occasions, usually after an hour or so of running I hear a beep and this shows up in dmesg:

After that Xorg either hogs on CPU or is unstable (up to hanging the system completely). When I restart Xorg everything is fine again and the problem doesn't occur until next reboot.

I tried to upgrade the kernel from stock 2.6.32 to 2.6.39 from unstable repository but that didn't help. Booting with irqpoll option only seems to prolong the initial time period after which the problem occurs.

I'm using latest NVIDIA drivers and Realtek firmware from firmware-realtek package. I have two GTX 560Ti that run in SLI. Disabling SLI or taking out one card completely doesn't solve the problem either.

Last but not least, right after boot-up those lines are usually present in dmesg:

I'm not sure if it's related or a symptom of a bigger problem so I'm posting it just in case.

Just a hunch... Go into your BIOS and disable anything about your graphics "SERR" feature. You also might try updating to a later kernel if possible.

Unfortunately I don't have any such option in my BIOS. When it comes to kernel I run 2.6.39 so the next one is 3.0.0 which is still in RC stage. –  MasterM Jun 26 '11 at 16:50

I have the exact same problem, running Debian 6.0, tried a lot of kernels (2.6.32, 2.6.38, 2.6.39) and lot of kernel parameters ("irqpoll" or "noapic" made no difference, but "acpi=off" made the system usable sometimes for almost a few days). So, you can try running with "acpi=off" for starters.

My mainboard is an Asus P8H67-M EVO, are you also using an Asus mainboard with a Sandy Bridge chipset? If yes, also try updating the BIOS, it might fix the problem.

Yes, I have Asus P8P67 EVO with a Core i7 2600K. I've recently upgraded both BIOS and Linux kernel (3.0.0) to the newest version and sadly the problem didn't seem to go away. –  MasterM Aug 3 '11 at 21:21

It seems I've finally found a workaround for this problem.

One needs to add pci=routeirq boot option to the kernel. As stated in documentation, it does the following:

Do IRQ routing for all PCI devices. This is normally done in pci_enable_device(), so this option is a temporary workaround for broken drivers that don't call it.

It seems that NVIDIA Xorg driver is the culprit here. I should probably file a bug report.
