I'm a bit of a clean freak when it comes to my start menu so I organise all of my shortcuts into categories.

The problem begins when I manually move a shortcut after the program has been installed. Since not all programs give you the option to specify a start menu location, this can often cause issues when un-installing or upgrading the program in the future.

Now some programs keep their shortcut locations in the registry, so usually after install I manually find this and modify the registry to point to the new locations. Thus fixing the issues when un-installing or upgrading. However this does not work for all programs

A perfect Example of this is iTunes, iTunes will not let you specify a custom shortcut location in the start menu. So when you manually move the shortcut it creates problems. iTunes updates often so when you do install an update it will create a new shortcut in the default location.

You then need to reorganise those shortcuts, again.

  • Does anyone know of a program that will enable to you to customise your start menu, and then make the new shortcut location the default for the each program?

  • Or is this something we have to deal with and manually change ourselves all the time?

This is something I've dealt with for years and I'm tired of it. Is there a better way?
