In Windows XP, a Windows Explorer window will be automatically updated to show any new files added to its currently-viewed folder at the bottom of the list. This is quite desirable behavior as it updates and shows you that you have a new file.

In Windows 7, Windows Explorer does neither of these things - it often does not show that there's a new file in the currently-viewed folder at all, let alone put it at the bottom of the list.

Is there a setting in Windows 7 that will make the Windows Explorer windows automatically show new files at the bottom?

Use Case - a web-browser downloads a new file into the standard downloads folder. If I have that folder open in a Windows 7 Windows Explorer window, I want to see that new file at the bottom of the window.

Edit - other people do not seem to have this problem. I should mention that I leave 10+ windows open at all times, for up to a month at a time between reboots. If they are going "stale", is there a setting to give them a longer life-span?

In my experience, Windows 7 doesn't even update the current folder consistently when you do things in the current folder through that Explorer window. – bwall Jun 29 '11 at 19:23
I just downloaded a file, and it went right to the bottom. – KCotreau Jun 29 '11 at 19:25
I second @KCotreau. – soandos Jun 29 '11 at 19:28
The only thing I do is set my folders to details view, and go into the Folder Options>View, and show hidden files, and uncheck the next three Hide options through "Hide protected operating system files". What browser are you using? – KCotreau Jun 29 '11 at 19:34
@KCotreau Chrome - the files show up once I hit F5. – Haphazard Jun 29 '11 at 19:35

Try it using IE once...I wonder if IE has coding in it to automatically refresh the folder.
