I currently have a 4x2TB HDD in RAID 5 in a DAS and would like to turn it into a NAS. Could I connect the DAS via USB 3.0 to my old laptop, and load FreeNAS unto it and turn it into a NAS solution?

This is possible, yes. I believe that both FreeNAS and OpenFiler will be able to use USB storage. | |||
