I want to index my external Hard drive, so that i can search it later, but i want the search to be available from any pc/laptop where i plug in the device, so basically I am looking for portable software which will store the index on the hard drive itself.

If the software can provide full text search then it'll be great - not a requirement though.

Please tell me, what will be the best solution (Windows OS) ?

I have good experience with DocFetcher which can search for text inside the files. For searching files only I use Locate32 but I did not try it as portable whether it does not need installing.

Edit: also read some positive feedback about Index Your Files.
