Scenario:

I want to set up parental controls to be able to do the following:

  • Monitor URLs visited (and be able to blacklist sites)
  • Monitor I/O by device (IOS apps, Windows based games)
  • Monitor I/O type (VOIP, Streaming Video/Audio)

If necessary, I want to be able to set up the following

  • Blackout times for specific devices (for ex. No internet for kiddie iPod after 8pm)
  • Block inappropriate sites for specific devices or all devices

Current equipment:

  • Comcast High Speed internet service
  • Ubee Cable Modem
  • Buffalo nFiniti wireless router

My questions are:

a. Are there other parental controls that I have not thought of?
b. Is DDWRT supported on my router?

please see the duplicate questions on superuser. The short answer is usually that parental controls normally don't work, and shouldn't be used in place of either education and trust. However, if the child is very young (read: younger than knowing how to circumvent the restrictions) then there are options. The duplicate questions on this site outline these. – Sirex Jul 5 '11 at 11:00

There are so many questions that portions of this question are a duplicate of that I can't even choose one to close it as a dupe of. Furthermore, your question is too broad in the different things you're asking for, but too specific about what you want to do, to be answered practically. And finally, you haven't even bothered to look up the simplest things yourself, like if your router supports dd-wrt. – nhinkle Jul 7 '11 at 1:24
@nhinkle - I really cannot look up what I do not know. DD-WRT was an Unknown-Unknown to me! – Raj More Jul 7 '11 at 20:00

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

You never mentioned your OS, Windows 7 has Parental controls built in, it will not cover all of your needs, but is a good start if you use W7.

I do not want to set up each machine individually - I'd rather have control at the router so it can apply to all machines. – Raj More Jul 5 '11 at 17:12
Asking what equipment you need will get this topic closed as a shopping question, the question needs to be specific to the hardware/firmware you own. You might re-word your original post to ask about firmware for your current router that has this functionality. Google DDWRT to see if it is available for your model. – Moab Jul 5 '11 at 22:54

I use OpenDNS to block URLs. They use a community edited list of sites to filter and it is fairly accurate. Nice poart is there is nothing on the local machine/network to mess with except setting DNS to point tho their servers. It will not track I/O as you mentioned.

I tried the built in Windows 7 parental controls but it wasn't enough. I got webwatcher from http://www.parentalcontrolapps.com/windows-7 . It was recommended b/c they have a discount there. But, the 3rd party software can be complicated at first, but be patient, it is more granular and you can get a lot more out of it.. let me know if you want omre help.
