I am looking for a short list of good audio editing programs on windows or mac. I'd like to have pros and cons for each one. I don't mind if it is complex or not free, i want something powerfull.

One of the way to choose something like you need it's to write "Top audio editors" in google, b/c there are a lot of such software reviews in internet. Also this seems to be usefull. – Daria Jul 5 '11 at 22:10
I trust people on stackexchange more than average internet reviews, that's why i am asking the question here – pinouchon Jul 5 '11 at 22:31

I like Audacity. It's free, powerful, simple and cross-platform. I've used it for filtering out background noise in stuff, that's about all actually. Other ppl who are more audio-crazy may suggest 'better' things.

I also use Audacity. Some time ago I could work with Sonic Foundry Sound Forge (on Windows, I think it was 5.0 version) which was also very good. The company was later bought by Sony and I do not know if the software is still developed... :-)
