I have an old computer with thousands of emails under Outlook Express on an old Windows XP PC. I'd like to move them to a newer Windows 7 PC which uses Outlook 2010. What's the best way to do this? Just copying the emails manually via a flash drive isn't working because the Date Created gets reset to today's date, which makes it difficult to sort through the emails.

You do not say what version of Outlook you are using, and while the process is basically the same as in the link I give below, in Outlook 2010, the import location is under File>Open>Import.

You can follow these directions here, which are pretty detailed for both when the import has both programs on the same computer and when the are on different computers. What I would do if they were on different computers, is temporarily install Outlook on the same computer as Outlook Express currently is installed, do the import, which creates the .PST file, then copy the completed .PST file to the new computer.

Hmm...guess I'll have to install a free trial of outlook on this old thing, thanks. – notfed Jul 9 '11 at 22:20
You could export, then import, but I think that way is cleaner and easier. I have never had an import go wrong, and I have migrated many companies. – KCotreau Jul 9 '11 at 22:24
One more question that might save you some headaches: Are you using POP3 or IMAP? – KCotreau Jul 9 '11 at 22:24

Depends on your version of Outlook.

  1. Export your data from Outlook express

  2. Import the old data into Outlook.

Here are the instructions for importing to Outlook 2002 and 2003, and 2007
