I'm part of a college tv station, and we need some way to schedule broadcasts (right now we just play a playlist on a loop). However, we don't have the money to buy commercial broadcast automation software, which usually runs over $1000 for a full license. Does anyone know of any free or open source software that could do that?

I googled for a while but was only able to find radio broadcast software such as Rivendell or Airtime. The only solution I could find for video was to use VLC's scheduled streaming feature. However, that would mean editing a VLC configuration file directly in order to schedule videos, and then running a second player in order to capture the stream and play it out to the air.

No idea if this exists, but have you searched for a VLC frontend that would make that configuration easier for you? – Flimzy Jul 10 '11 at 5:20
VLC has something called DVBlast - maybe could help you ... videolan.org/projects/dvblast.html – Juhele Jul 11 '11 at 5:43

I may be overstepping this question by suggesting BoinxTV as it is not free. Although, I suggest the application because it is feature packed, easy to use, and isn't too expensive ($499).

You could always try BoinxTV out first; a free trial is provided.
