I have a 500GB WD My Passport Essential external hard drive (model WDBACY5000ARD-00) which is not recognized on my Dell Studio laptop. I've just installed Windows 7 Professional on it. The hard drive used to work on my laptop with Windows XP but when I installed Windows 7 it is no longer recognized. Please help me; there are important folders and files that I really need for my work and my old stuff before I installed Windows 7 was copied onto it.

Do you see the drive in the Disk Manager (right-click Computer>Manage)? What does it say for the status of the disk and the partitions? If it shows up as a disk, is the color of the bar black, or Blue? If Blue, does it have a letter assigned? Post back. – KCotreau Jul 10 '11 at 14:21
