I enjoy writing -- stories, essays, diatribes etc. Last weekend I worked on a piece on my iPhone using the built-in "Notes" app. I kept emailing it to myself every time I wanted to "save" a version. It worked, but it sucked because the file was stuck inside my phone. I need the file to be on the Internet so I can work on my phone when that's convenient and on my computer otherwise and it's all the same file. Also, it would be nice to have the file really be in my version control repository on a remote server.

It would be great if, when necessary, I could use the phone to work on even long piece of writing like a long essay or a novel.

Buy a keyboard to go with your laptop – dubRun Sep 2 '09 at 18:58
Err.. Don't. :P The iPhone keyboard is good, but at the end of the day, and keyboard that's 3.5 inches is not going to be good enough for serious typing. – Macha Sep 2 '09 at 19:10

+1 for writeroom, I use the Mac version. – Graham Lee Aug 31 '09 at 10:55
Just tried this and found that some of my data went missing in between uses. I think this is a syncing problem like the Notes issue (see the second and subsequent posts at forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=828151). – Tommy Herbert Jul 22 '10 at 14:28

I've not tried it myself on an iPhone (don't have one), but My Writing Nook is a web based editor which has recently added netbook support. Might be good enough on an iPhone.

Looks great. Lacks iPhone support though. – Ethan Aug 28 '09 at 1:40

I'm not sure how it would go writing a full novel, but Evernote has support for documents, voice notes and photos and will automatically sync notes on an iPhone and a computer via an internet server. It will also GeoTag notes with your current location.
