http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_mobile_phone_culture:

Some mobile phones are waterproof, even in the high-specifications segment.

When they say a phone is waterproof? what exactly does that mean? does it mean that i can dive into the beach with the phone in the pocket, or i can make phonecalls/sms underwater ?

It may be that the phones are made water resistant to the manufacturers best ability, but it's backed by a repair or replacement guarantee.

This might be considered 'proof' against loss through water damage.
