I have created a Mail Merge template that takes in data from an Excel file and creates different versions of documents. However, I note that on several occasions, on performing the mail merge, the resulting documents have these "merge fields" entered in a completely different font.

On googling, I noticed that several web fora have suggested that one appends charformat to the merge fields - but this does not appear to make any difference. If I click preview changes, and then preview changes again (to unpreview), the variables show in a different font once again.
