I am using Ubuntu 11.04. I have noticed that currently, the file system usage is around 40GB for the memory. There is a big chunk of available disk space. This size does not include the size of /home folder.

Is this much of disk space usage normal for a Ubuntu installation?

What do you mean by "memory" usage exactly? Virtual memory size? Have you run any command (if so, which, what was the output?) or any application (if so, post a screenshot) to find out? – slhck Jul 16 '11 at 11:59
@slhck My drive partition has 100Gb of space. out of which 40Gb is used by /home,and 20Gb is free space and other 40Gb is used by other system files. Hope this message clarifies. – Vijay Shanker Jul 16 '11 at 12:02
it's disk space usage, not memory. As for "is it normal" - it depends. On what you've installed, how much data you've stroed & varies wildly from install to install – Sathya Jul 16 '11 at 12:28
