Is there a free tool that I can download somewhere to convert .lit files and .epub files to .pdf on my PC?

This might not be exactly what you're looking for but Calibre will convert files to and from a variety of eBook formats, including ePUB. However it is more of an iTunes for eBooks, not a file converter.

Calibre is huge. I don't need the full power-house of Calibre when all I want is to read an .epub file and a .lit file that I have on my computer. – becko Jul 22 '11 at 4:11

Have you tried printing to PDF?

Instead of converting, I would suggest using a proper eBook reader. Unlike PDFs, your EPUB books are reflowable. That means the content can adjust to fit whatever screen you read it on, whether it's a PC, smartphone, or a tablet. You can also adjust font sizes, or even switch the colors so the page is black and the text is white (great for reading in the dark).

I downloaded Microsoft Reader and it does the trick for the .lit file. However, I don't use Firefox and the Adobe website keeps giving me trouble for some reason, so I haven't been able to open the .epub file. Is there an alternative to the ebup readers you mention? Thanks. – becko Jul 23 '11 at 5:38
Sony Reader is decent (it's based on Adobe Digital Editions) ebookstore.sony.com/download – rakslice Dec 30 '11 at 9:31

For .epub to .pdf, this script here which uses Prince XML as a backend gives very high quality results.
