There was a time when identifying the purpose of a process took about 10 seconds with a quick googling. Now everybody and their brother has some garbage crapware site trying to sell you something because "[your search term] may be a virus! Install this to make sure you're safe!"

Is there a decent site for tracking down services, or am I just behind the times and this is pointless because everybody just names their virus after some common and legitimate executable?

Process Library is a part of Uniblue, which imho has some annoying marketing tactics - but this page is the best I've found so far. You just have to be careful where you click. Avoid the "Free scans" and the like.

Unfortunately they don't tend to list known good processes. Lack of a negative hit doesn't overly reassure me that a process is legit. – Kara Marfia Aug 28 '09 at 13:43
