I'm finally going to take the step and back up all of my data online. I'm looking at the different services, and need some help figuring out all the ups and downs.
These are my requirements:
- Must have unlimited space for a reasonably price ($5/Month or less) (Also with no fee for upload/download)
- Nobody but me can ever have access to my backups! (using a private key)
- They should follow the Safe Harbor Principles
- I'd really like them to be able to back up ALL my files (that also means .EXE!)
I started writing this question because I wanted some advise on which service to take, but now it seems like I've been going through most of them, and looked at everything myself.
I'd love to hear if I missed out on anything. Either if it's some awesome service, some parameter I didn't look at or if I over valuated something. (as I said, I didn't use any of this yet, so I don't really know if "only" having my deleted files backed up for 30/60 days is bad)
Backblaze ($50 / year)
After reading more in the details, I found out they didn't support .EXE or .ISO, and I have plenty of files in that format I need to have backed up! (see the details I found about them all the way below!)
CrashPlan+ Unlimited ($50 / year)
Good:
- Doesn't delete anything! ( inactive / deleted files / external hard drive )
- Advanced settings for versioning. (I know it's not SVN/GIT, but still nice)
- Also backs up .EXE and .ISO (at least I couldn't find them in not-back-up)
- Have advanced settings for group of files
Bad:
- Still some things it won't backup (fx Application Data / Local Settings)
- Seems like it's hard on memory use when running (link)
asuswebstorage ($30 / year)
Been looking a little at it, but it really don't seem that good. Also their info isn't really that accessible.
Keepit ($60 / year)
Good
- Allows you to save what ever you want!
Bad:
- "only" keeps files for 60 days (of course they always save one backup, but not fx deleted files)
(Couldn't find info on Safe Harbor)
Carbonite ($59/year)
(don't really have that much info on them)
Bad:
- "only" safes deleted files for 30 days
- seems like there are some file types it will not back up (link)
- Apparently can't back up external hard drives
Timeline Cloud
Seems like awesome service, but it's just much more expensive (fx $170/year for 100GB and 5 users)
The Choice
So after looking over it again, I've narrowed it down to either CrashPlan or Keepit. Pros of CrashPlan is that: it doesn't delete, seems like it has better security, some advanced settings, has been in business a long time (since 2001) and is cheaper. Keepit has the ability to save all files... and that's basically it.
Any good advice on how to make the final pick?
Backblaze details:
Good:
- I really like their way of handling security. (link)
Bad:
- Deletes content if inactive in 6 months (probably not going to happen, but don't like the thought)
- Removes deleted files after 30 days
- Keeps different versions for 30 days
- Need to plug in my external hard drive at least once every 30 days
- Doesn't back up things like .EXE or .ISO
