Are there any useful peer to peer social networks out there? I have found PeerSoN and PeerBook that are research projects but they don't seem to have anything up and running. Especially PeerBook sounds like the concept that I'm looking for, but its blog hasn't been updated since July 2010.

About PeerBook:

The basic idea is this: A user downloads a small (Java) program, runs it, and then has access via their web browser to a local web server acting as a gateway onto the PeerBook network. Once they’ve created a profile in much the same way as they would on Facebook, the profile is encrypted and then stored on the distributed storage network made up of all currently-online PeerBook instances. All data is replicated to ensure that it is still available even if several copies are deleted, or if the PeerBook instance storing that copy goes offline.

Is there a better StackExchange site for this question? I thought about Web Applications but since P2P networks usually require some client software it doesn't really fit. I thought SuperUser was a better match, could someone please post a comment on why it is considered off-topic? – D.H. Jul 31 '11 at 12:07
