I am considering to buy a NAS-server for home, which should work as web/file/media/backup-server. I have been browsing the net quite a bit for different products for a while and essentially I am stuck wondering the practical and theoretical differences between different non-standard RAID implementations by different manufacturers.

I was hoping to get some inside scoop about pros and cons of the following implementations, from you who have knowledge or have used one of the following implementations:

  • xRAID (NetGear)
  • BeyondRAID (Drobo) and
  • SHR (Synology)

@studiohack: I really think that it was a rash decision to close this subject. I agree that the question might induce opinions but, I dont know that the questions was beyond save. It could have been a wiki for instance... The reason I asked this question is that there is very little on respective standard other than manufacturerers own explanation – posdef Jul 26 '11 at 6:06
