I need some insight on the requirements of a server with the following characteristics:

the server hosts a standard PCI card
the server serves short (100kb) messages to clients
the messages are generated by the PCI card at a rate of 16Mbps
there can be simultaneous connections (several 1000s)
the server must be able to handle 4096 V-LANs
the ethernet port should be 1 x 1000BASE-X/T/CX
the OS should be Linux 2.6
no graphics or sound card is required

This is for industrial purposes and will be deployed in a datacenter. I'm looking for the cheapest solution and most energy efficient processor.

this is also so incredibly detailed I think even SU or SF woudln't be able to help you. See if there's any local companies that do server builds. – tombull89 Jul 28 '11 at 11:26
