You really need to explain what you're trying to do... do you want to remote desktop to a server, connect to a samba file share, shared printer, etc? – Jon7 Jul 28 '11 at 22:42
I have to pick up some file that is there on the samba server ....no printing or anything /no remote desktop either ..just connect and copy some files – Manish Jul 28 '11 at 22:43

Are you on the same local network as the server?

If so, try going to Start>Run, and then typing \\ServerName (for example, \\Freeman1) and hitting enter. If this doesn't work, try \\IPAddress (for example, \\192.168.1.155)

If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, go to Start, and search for 'Network', not 'Network and Sharing Center'. Click it, give it a few moments to detect your network configuration, and hopefully you'll see the name of your server, which you can then access by double clicking on it.

If it helped, rate it up!

Thanks I did already try that but cannot see the server name under the network though .I am pretty sure however that I am in the same local network. – Manish Jul 28 '11 at 22:55
You should probably first check to make sure you are indeed in the same local network. On the Windows machine, check your Network settings, or go to the command prompt (Start>Run>'cmd'), and type 'ipconfig' to get your local IP. On the other machine (I'm assuming it's Linux), go to the terminal and type 'ifconfig', and find your local IP address there as well. If the first three groups of numbers (providing you're using IPv4) are the same (such as 192.168.123), then you're on the same local network. – dwmcc Jul 28 '11 at 23:00
Well I did ping the another machine known to be on the network from this client and it is alive. Also it connected if I didnt include smb: in the server name.Quite weird but worked. – Manish Jul 28 '11 at 23:11
I'm glad it worked for you. – dwmcc Jul 28 '11 at 23:33
