I have two laptops, one running Windows 7 home premium 32bit service pack 1 (Toshiba Notebook) and the other Windows Vista home basic 32bit (Compaq Presario c700 notebook). I am allowed internet access from my landlady who shares it via a Thomson Gateway TG585v8. Now I have no problems whatsoever with connecting and using internet from the Windows 7 machine. But can't connect on the Windows Vista one. It states limited connectivity, each time I diagnose the problem, with either "automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter" or "Reset network adapter" rebooting. I don't have access to the physical router but since the Windows 7 machine always has net access I'm guessing it's not the main problem.

All I can say is that I would try using a pccard or USB network adapter to test. Despite you being able to connect with the Windows 7 computer, often this is also a sign that a router is dying. I have seen plenty that let one connect but not another, and they were just on their way out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_Card – KCotreau Jul 29 '11 at 20:47
