Can you please recommend me a good reminder program to take breaks away from the PC.

I need it to be able to set a break interval and most importantly, not to automatically start counting work time once the break is over, but having to click "start work" or something after the break to start the count again.

Knowing the Operating system would be nice if you are looking for a desktop app. – slhck Jul 30 '11 at 12:23
I found one called Breaker, which does exactly that but it beeps annoyingly when the break comes. – Ilian Andreev Jul 30 '11 at 13:31

I use EyeDefender when I'm working late nights and Workrave when I have to work during the day. Personally, I set them to "disturb" me every 25 mins, for 5 mins (15-30 mins every 4th break). This way, I can use them as Pomodoro timers. Workrave also displays some exercises to do during the breaks.

Either has a underlying purpose for me -- to prevent eyestrain, stress and RSI, since I spend almost 18 hours each day in front of my computer.

All versions of Windows have the Task Scheduler application. This can configured to remind you to take breaks by running an app, script, or just about anything.

I'm pretty sure PostureMinder will do all that, we used to have to have it at our old workplace.

You should mention that it comes at 55₤, which is a bit.. well, expensive. – slhck Jul 30 '11 at 12:49

Some time ago I wrote an application which seems to address your needs.

I've wrapped it into installer and put it here: http://ficusdev.com/RestPauseReminder/Description.

These are designed for 25-minute work units and may do the trick for you: http://gigaom.com/collaboration/9-free-pomodoro-timers/
