I am looking for open source alternatives to Final Cut Pro.

It is appreciated if you provide at least the following info:

  • name of the software
  • operating system
  • strong points
  • weak points

Note: If you think there is no open source alternative to Final Cut Pro, I'm interested in those arguments as well.

Just Final Cut Pro itself, or all of Final Cut Studio? –  Spiff Aug 4 '11 at 8:41

Final Cut Pro is the successor of Final Cut Studio. at the end it is regarding video editing. feel free to add alternatives. –  udo Aug 4 '11 at 8:51

Final Cut Pro X is the successor of Final Cut Studio 3, but Final Cut Studio 3 contained Final Cut Pro 7. FCPX is widely regarded as lacking key pro features that were ing FCS3. Are you looking for something that has all the features of FCS3, or something that only has the features of FCPX? Just curious. Either way I don't have a solution for you, but maybe this clarification will help others hone their suggestions. –  Spiff Aug 4 '11 at 8:57

have no experience with Final cut, but there are some programs, you could try.

There is Kdenlive - Free and open source video editor for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD

Kdenlive is an intuitive and powerful multi-track video editor, including most recent video technologies. Our software is completely free, as defined by the GNU foundation.

Check the features here. It is similar to Pinnacle Studio (which is commercial). It is easy to use and intuitive. Some time ago, the users complained about poor stability, but my friend uses it (on Linux laptop) and had no problems, so it was probably solved.

Or you can try Lightworks Beta - professional product, now released as opensource, which looks very promising. Currently it is only available for Windows. Linux version should come later.
