XBMC supports this using Third Party Plugins. It is also cross platform.

Or you could try Boxee, a port of XMBC. – alex Aug 29 '09 at 10:28
XBMC can't record TV or watch live TV... or can it? – skypecakes Jan 7 '10 at 20:09
...no, it can't: superuser.com/questions/12806/tv-tuner-in-xbmc – skypecakes Jan 7 '10 at 21:21

Media Portal is free and can handle TV, haven't tried that part myself so I can't say if it's any good.

It's a decent media player though.

Before I got my TiVo I used SnapStream Beyond TV. It's $99 for the full version if you choose to use it and that comes with a FireFly Remote control and access to the guide without subscription. I bought Beyond TV over 4 years ago and still use it as a backup when TiVo is busy recording 2 programs.

There's also SageTV, which a lot of people seem to like.

I'm curious why you don't want to use MCE. I just switched from Mythtv to Windows 7 media center, and I'm still trying to decide whether I like it.

If you want something that runs on Linux, there's no contest, install MythTV. I was happy using the MythDora distribution that sets everything up for you. If you're a hardcore Linux user, you may prefer to install it on your Linux distro of choice.

Hardcore linux user that's all, why install windows when I pass 95% of my computing time on linux ? – zillion Jan 7 '10 at 17:41
I'm confused... I thought you wanted something that runs on Windows? Your subject is "Windows alternatives to Windows Media Center." Apparently so did everyone else; most of the answers are Windows programs. – skypecakes Jan 7 '10 at 20:03
