I'm about to install analogue camera's around the house, which I will use together with Zoneminder. The video data will be captured with a USB dongle.

My question:

  • Can I capture this data with a little "computer" (like my old Openmoko or OpenWRT router I have lying around) and send that data over the network to my server? (For example pipe the /dev/video0 data directly to the server, perhaps)

  • What are the minimum system requirements to do so?

I guess the video data will at some point need to be re-encoded. If the bandwith allows it that can happen at the server. (If it is possible to do it)

Why do it like this?

I'll have 1 server dedicated to this and other home automation things, but the camera's are pretty far apart, and the server is even located in an outer corner.

At most there is about 70 meters of space between them. Laying all that cable is a waste. A very, very costly waste.

I'm planning between 7 and 10 camera's. 2 of those can go to the server directly, the others can't.

I'll be using a cat6 cable to the server.
