I frequently, but not always, have problems with video chat in Windows Live Messenger (Version 2009, build 14.0.8117.416) on Windows XP.
Generally, on my conversation window with my contact, the "Video" option on the tool bar is greyed out. If I try to start a video conversation from the main window by clicking Actions -> Video -> Start a Video Call, then select the contact, I get the following error:
Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x8ac70012)
Google finds several hits for this error, but they are either dead-ends, or suggest removing/reconfiguring McAfee--which I do not have installed.
I would guess it might be a firewall related issue, but the problem is intermittent, and will sometimes work without me having changed anything.
Sometimes I will have this problem with one contact, but not another, and sometimes if I ask my contact to reboot, we'll be able to connect. Both of these suggest the problem may be on the remote end.
Is there anything else I can try on my end of the connection to mitigate this problem, or to prove that the problem is on the remote end?
