I am looking for a long term archival solution on the cloud, what I need is to archive some files that I don't need to access often but also don't want to keep around on local disks. These are files that I might archive for 5+ years and then delete them when I know for sure I don't need them. These files are pretty big anywhere from 500MB to 25GB so I need lots of space and I don't want to split big files into small files.
I am currently using DorpBox and JungleDisk and both fail in the area of archiving. Because the model they implement is one of syncing a directory on my laptop to a filesystem in the cloud. What I want is a local directory that I can copy a file to and have that file then go to the online archive and once it is in the online archive and has been verified by the backup software to be in the cloud, I want this system to delete my local copy and keep the online version forever or until I till it to delete archived file. I also want those files downloadable form the web, and I want to be able to create a unique link that would allow some one to download any files from my archive should I want to give them the right to do so, this link should be configurable so that it can only be used once, or use within a date range.
I have not been able to find any services that offer this type of archival behavior was hopping someone has heard of a company that is focused more on long term archival than machine backup. It would seem like a trivial feature to add to existing cloud offering not really sure why they don't offer it maybe I have missed something.
Some good discussion on what the differences are between Archiving vs. Backup.
