I am trying to get sound to work over hdmi so that the sound plays through my tv.

I ran alsa and it says: "This sound device does not have any controls".

Alsa identifies a card called "HDA Nvidia", chip "Nvidia ID b".

I looked at aplay -l and that does not list any playback hardware devices either.

If anyone has any ideas it would be really appreciated... :)

Have you installed the nvidia proprietary drivers, they are the only ones I have found that support audio from HDMI, you need to use the additional drivers program in administration.

I did install the proprietary drivers. – James Aug 14 '11 at 13:06
I guess it's down to your alsa configuration then unfortunately I hate working with alsa so I can't help you with that, good luck. – Col Aug 14 '11 at 15:00
