SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (i586)
VERSION = 10
PATCHLEVEL = 2

Trying to update my java installation. I downloaded the .bin from java.com, followed the instructions, seemed to go fine. My /usr/java dir looks like this:

total 4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   16 2011-08-16 17:59 default -> /usr/java/latest
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2011-08-16 17:59 jre1.6.0_26
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   21 2011-08-16 17:59 latest -> /usr/java/jre1.6.0_26

But, doing java -version at the terminal still gives:

java version "1.4.2_17"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_17-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_17-b06, mixed mode)

How do I get the system to recognize the 1.6.x install?

The simplest way is probably to uninstall both versions, then install the latest JDK. – Joe Internet Aug 17 '11 at 0:51
