To access a client's server, I must first start a VPN connection and then connect to the Windows machine via RDP/RDC.

I am able to connect to the VPN with no trouble (PPTP), and, using RDC, can connect to the Windows box just fine.

The trouble is that:

  1. At some points (sometimes it seems random, other times after a big job like copying a large directory), the remote machine becomes unresponsive. Sometimes it will eventually become responsive, other times not.

  2. Sometimes related to the above, and other times not, the remote connection is lost. The VPN still shows as connected, but 9 times out of 10, if I try to reconnect, it comes back as failed. This continues until I disconnect and reconnect the VPN connection.

Sometimes I can get 30 minutes of work done, other times it's 5 minutes after reconnecting.

I thought this was just an issue with the client's VPN/RDP settings, but a google search came up with some solutions for Windows users under the same scenario (RDP over VPN).

Is there a setting in the VPN I should change? Or something on the remote machine that should be fixed?

I think the issue might be with the PPP IP address being assigned to the VPN connection, but I'm not sure what to put in if I set this to manual....
