The server name can be so confusing, it can mean

  • Server Machine in general ( hardware)
  • Windows Server 2008 ( software)
  • Printer Server (hardware)
  • SQL Server (software)
  • WebServer (hardware or software)
  • A hardware which runs Virtual Machine which in turn runs a server software (software)
  • A machine which does not necessarily have a Monitor and it used to save and serve data (Hardware)

And many more. Is a Server software or Hardware? Can anybody distinguish why this terminology is so confusing?

Not a real question? So a webserver is software or hardware? – Dave Aug 25 '11 at 15:57
how is a print server hardware? its basically a print queue – Stephen Martin Aug 25 '11 at 16:13
@Steve Martin: I do have a tiny computer, which only has an Ethernet and USB port (and a power plug). It pretty much runs only the print queue and the networking stack; that device is commonly called a print server: server on one end, printer on the other ;) As with server, it can mean either, both, or just one of those, even though it's rather confusing. – Piskvor Aug 25 '11 at 16:31
So what is server name of the printer server and where do you install it? – Dave Aug 25 '11 at 17:00
