Is it physically and legally possible? I'd love a 2U rackmount Mac system for example.

Well, as long as you own the hardware you can destroy it any way you like, the main things you can't do relate to installing the OS software on non-Mac hardware as far as I know. – Mokubai Aug 28 '11 at 18:30

Buy a Mac mini, put it on a shelf. Instant 2U rack mount. – Daniel Beck Aug 28 '11 at 18:30

Yes you can, it's not really the best option as it tends to be more expensive that just buying a mac on it's own. You can look for parts online and assemble it yourself. Just don't turn to others for help if you're having a problem. – Sandeep Bansal Aug 28 '11 at 18:43

I took some photos of a 3U custom rackmount G4 someone made: command-tab.com/2008/04/07/rackmount-g4 I'm sure the arrangement of parts will be different for a newer machine, but it's definitely do-able and I don't see why it wouldn't be completely legal. You bought the machine, after all :-) – Collin Allen Aug 28 '11 at 19:00
