Every time I reboot or restart, Windows 7 is not saving the changes I make in the ClearType adjustments. In fact, it turns it off and I have to reset every time I fire up my system. I am working on dual displays (extended) with my laptop (DELL Latitude D630) display as the secondary and my HP monitor as primary, in portrait position. I was going to restore to a time when this wasn't a problem but Windows 7 automatically deletes restore points (bad, bad) after a certain amount of time so this solution is not available.

Have gone through all my display settings and font smoothing is turned on but even that doesn't seem to make a difference.

You could use Process Monitor to see where it saves the settings and then figure out why the settings are gone the next time. However, I feel like this is related to your external monitor being (dis)connected which causes the settings to change. Have you looked into the options of the control panel of your Graphics Card? – Tom Wijsman Aug 31 '11 at 17:45
